Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel intends to move back to October 2021 for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections planned for May 2020.
Pimentel submitted House Bill 905 requesting the postponement of the said elections from 11 May 2020 to 11 October 2021.
The lawmaker said this is to offer more time to prepare for the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
He stated that they want to offer the Comelec higher leeway to prepare for the next barangay and SK elections, given that they have just completed the domestic and local mid-term polls of May 13. Plus, they can defer expenditure on P3 billion.
In specific, they want the Comelec to ensure that young Filipinos who come of age have plenty of time to register for the first moment as electors so that they can genuinely participate in the ballot.
The bill also offers for the extension of the term of 670,000 sitting barangay and SK elections until their successors are elected, unless they are removed or suspended for a reason.
Isabela Representative Faustino Dy V also submitted a comparable bill seeking to postpone the barangay and SK elections.
Dy’s bill, which is House Bill No. 47, calls for the said elections to be held in May 2023 to allow barangay and SK representatives to have more time to meet their programs and initiatives.
