Pacquiao explains reason for choosing Keith Thurman as next opponent

Manny Pacquiao

One of the reasons why Manny Pacquio agreed to a July 20 bout in Las Vegas, the Filipino world champion stated a fight with Keith Thurman would be entertaining.

“I liked the way he fought against Danny Garcia,” the 8-division champion stated in an interview. “I thought his style would match up well with mine. We are going to give the fans a great fight and an exciting night.”

Pacquiao retains the World Boxing Association “regular” welterweight title, while Thurman grasps the WBA “super” welterweight strap.

“I believe Keith Thurman is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing,” he added.

“That is why I am fighting him. He has faced and beaten two former welterweight champions, Robert Guerrero and Danny Garcia, and one current welterweight champion of the world, Shawn Porter. I have always looked for the best challenges in my career and Keith Thurman is an undefeated WBA super champion.”

Nevertheless, Thurman has been comparatively quiet due to numerous injuries. Thurman fought one time in 2016 and in 2017 and was unseen in the game in 2018.

He came on to the ring once again to defend his title versus Josesito Lopez in January and barely won.

“I would say Keith Thurman has looked rusty in the past,” Pacquiao stated.

“I do not think that will be an issue when we fight because he has already fought once this year. I anticipate an action fight from him.”
