Duterte OK with the request of De Lima to visit critically ill mother

President Rodrigo Duterte considers no issue with the furlough request made by Sen. Leila de Lima to visit her ailing mother, his former personal assistant Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go said Tuesday.

“President Rodrigo Duterte said he would have no objection if the judiciary allowed Sen. Leila de Lima to see her mother,” Go’s office said in a declaration. Raymond Baguilat, a lawyer from De Lima, said previously that the mom of the senator, Norma Magistrado de Lima, was “critically ill” at a hospital in Iriga City, Camarines Sur and physicians said she might quickly pass away.

Last Friday, before the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 205, where De Lima faces drug-related charges, Baguilat submitted the furlough application. De Lima thinks that because of her strong resistance to Duterte and his policies, she was arrested on trumped-up charges.

Last Friday, De Lima asked for prayers in a letter from the prison room at Camp Crame as the health of her mother worsens.

Judge Liezel Aquiatan of Muntinlupa Branch 205 granted De Lima’s prior demands for furlough.

Last May, the tribunal had permitted De Lima to vote and attend her child Vincent Joshua de Lima Bohol’s thanksgiving dinner, which had just crossed the bar last June. However, the same branch had dismissed the application from De Lima to attend the law school graduation of her son in 2018.

De Lima has only seen her mom twice since she was arrested on drug charges in February 2017, first on Dec. 23, 2018 during a surprise visit to her prison cell, and last June 16 during her son’s thanksgiving dinner.
