Dismissed Malay, Aklan mayor Cawaling wins another term


Aklan Cicero Cawaling, sacked over gross negligence as mayor, won after he was proclaimed the winner of the local elections for the mayoralty post, according to broadcasts aired on local TV.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in April after the Ombudsman found him guilty of gross neglect of duty and other offenses brought Cawaling a dismissal order by the in connection with Boracay’s environmental problems.

The DILG stated earlier that Cawaling’s dismissal should serve as “a warning” to other erring local officials.

Cawaling had 16,277 votes as shown in parelectiontial and unofficial results from the Commission on Elections transparency server showed that as of 4:50 a.m. on Tuesday.

His opponent with the highest number of votes is Edison Bilog who had 22,609 votes. The results revealed a total of 100% of election returns.
