In some towns in Metro Manila, the Department of Interior and Local Government is deploying more police officers to assist clear roads of illegal sellers and improperly parked cars.
In a circular memorandum published Monday, the Interior Department instructed local governments nationwide to reclaim roads being used for personal purposes, a directive first raised last week by President Rodrigo Duterte during his annual report to the country.
Barangay commanders will be in charge of maintaining the roads after clearing activities, Año added.
Earlier, a tourism official commended Manila Mayor Isko Moreno for cleaning up Manila’s streets. DoT Assistant Secretary Roberto P. Alabado said Manila’s cleanup is anticipated to increase the city’s status as a shopping paradise for Southeast Asian tourists.
He stated that when visitors come here, they come to certain locations here in Manila instantly upon landing. They’re going to Intramuros, they’re going to Luneta, Rizal Park, Binondo. Some even go to Divisoria, particularly Asians.
These are places where it is merely a shopping paradise for some of our SEA (Southeast Asian) visitors.
