Agriculture Department said Wednesday it suggested to distribute rice to recipients of the government’s conditional cash transfer program to open up a fresh market for Filipino farmers.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar said the proposal was welcomed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, which administers the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps.
Some farmers complained that removing import caps on the staple grain resulted in lowering rice prices, hurting their revenue. Current beneficiaries of 4Ps receive a monthly P600 rice subsidy.
The DA proposition requires the DSWD to supply rice grains from local government units that purchase palay or rough rice directly from local landowners and the National Food Authority. Dar said he was also in talks with legislators to turn his suggestion into a policy.
